What is a Metal Stamp Jewelry?

Most jewelry items made of precious metal stamped with information about the purity of metal content. Generally the cap is placed in a conspicuous place on the item so it does not reduce the design. The stamp will usually be located on the inside of the band on the ring, on a post or basket setting on a pair of earrings, the warranty (parts of which the chain slides through) on the pendant, and the connecting ring or clasp on a necklace or bracelet. All jewelry stamps adhere to strict guidelines set by the Federal Trade Commission.

The term "karat" (usually abbreviated as "k", "K", or "Kt") refers to the relative purity of gold, pure gold is 24 karats. "Karat" is different from the "rust", which is a metric unit of weight for gemstones. In the context of gold jewelry, "plumb" is an ancient term meaning that the level of fineness or purity of the gold content is actually listed on the item. The word "Plumb" or the letter P is still occasionally followed the metal cap (eg "14k Plumb," "14KP").
